Visiting card maker

The card that lives on the fridge door for the next three years

A grocery card is not handed out at a meeting. It goes in the delivery bag and it ends up stuck on a fridge. That is a very good place to be, because it gets seen every single day.

So the card has to be readable across a kitchen, not just at reading distance. Big name, big number, nothing fancy.

Drawing your card...

Optional. JPG, PNG or WebP. It is fitted into the corner at its own shape, so a wide logo stays wide.

The card is 3.5 x 2 inches, the normal Indian visiting card size. 1050 x 600 is 300 dpi, which every press accepts. Ask the printer to keep 3 mm bleed on all sides.

Paper runs out and numbers change. An Ahoyy card is the same card, on a link you can edit.

What a kirana card must say

  • Home delivery: yes or no. This is the only reason most people keep the card.
  • Minimum order for free delivery, if you have one.
  • Opening and closing time, including Sunday.
  • One number that is always answered. Not three.
  • Whether you take UPI. Many older customers still ask.
  • Your area name, so a new neighbour knows you are close.

Getting the card into homes

In the delivery bagEvery single delivery. It costs almost nothing and it works.
With the monthly billFor customers on a khata, the card goes with the statement.
Society notice boardAsk the secretary. Most allow it for local shops.
New flats and tenantsA new family in the building is your best customer for years.
Stapled to a paper bagCheapest reminder there is.

Make your kirana shop card

  1. 1. Put the shop name big. That is what customers call it, even if the board says something else.
  2. 2. Write "Home delivery" in the one-line field if you deliver. It is the strongest line on the card.
  3. 3. Add the number you answer during shop hours.
  4. 4. Pick a light colour theme, because a dark card is hard to read at a distance on a fridge.
  5. 5. Download and print on thicker card stock so it survives a kitchen.

Why the ordering list is the real prize

A customer who can send you a list on WhatsApp instead of walking over is a customer who orders more often and orders more.

Print your WhatsApp number, and keep a page behind the QR listing what you stock, so a new customer can see whether you carry their brand before they call.

Common questions

Should I print my rate list on the card?
No. Grocery rates move every month. Print the shop name, delivery and the number, and keep the rates on a page you can edit.
What colour works best for a kirana card?
A light background with dark text. The card gets read from across a room, often in poor light, so contrast matters more than style.
How many cards should I print to start?
Enough for about a month of deliveries. Most shops find 500 is a sensible first run and the price per card drops sharply after that.
Do I need my GST number on the card?
Only if you deal with businesses that ask for GST bills. For household customers it just takes up space.
My shop has an old signboard name and a new one. Which goes on the card?
The name customers actually say out loud. If people still call it by the old name, print that, and put the registered name smaller if you need it.

Let regulars send you a list instead of walking over

A free Ahoyy page shows what you stock, your delivery timing and a WhatsApp button. The card points at it.
