Nobody wakes up wanting a plumber. They wake up because there is water on the bathroom floor and it is spreading towards the bedroom. It is eleven at night. They pick up the phone and type plumber into contacts.
Three results come up. Plumber. Plumber 2. Plumber new. None of them says which one came last year and did a good job. They call the first one. It rings out. They call the second. Wrong person, changed number. Then they give up on their own phone and ask the building group, and somebody else gets the work.
You did nothing wrong. You just were not findable at the one moment findability mattered.
The competition is not other plumbers. It is the search bar.
Every other trade in this list is competing for attention. Plumbing is different. When somebody needs you, they want you specifically, and they still cannot find you. The competition is a badly organised phonebook.
That means the highest value thing you can do is control how you get stored. Not your logo, not your card design. The name in the contact entry.
| Plumber | One of four. Loses to whoever answers first. |
|---|---|
| Ramesh | Found only if they remember your name, which at eleven at night they do not. |
| Ramesh plumber Kandivali | Found by three different searches. This is the target. |
| A saved link | Found, and it carries your rates and a WhatsApp button as well. |
When somebody taps Save contact on an Ahoyy card page, the entry arrives with your name and your work already in it. You are not relying on a customer typing something useful while standing in water.
Leave the number where the problem will happen
This is the same trick electricians use with the meter board, and it works even better for plumbing because water problems repeat in the same three places.
- 1. Get a sheet of small QR stickers printed once from your card page.
- 2. Stick one on the inside of the sink cupboard door, where a leak first shows.
- 3. Stick one near the water meter or the pump switch.
- 4. Stick one inside the bathroom door frame at the top, out of the way of splash.
- 5. Write your name and the word plumber above it, so it is obvious what the square is.
The QR opens a page, not a fixed number. If you change your SIM the stickers keep working, because you edit the page once. That is the difference between a sticker that lasts three years and a printed number that dies with your next SIM.
You are not leaving a card. You are leaving a note for a person who will be panicking, in the dark, holding a torch, exactly where the water is.
Say what you charge for a call out
The most common argument in plumbing is not about the work. It is about the visit. You travel across town, look at it for ten minutes, say it needs a part, and then have to explain why you are charging anything at all.
A rate list on your page ends that argument before it starts, because the customer agreed to it before you left home.
- • Visit charge as a fixed price, said plainly. This one line prevents most disputes.
- • Tap, flush and mixer replacement as fixed prices, since those are the same job everywhere.
- • Leak tracing and concealed pipe work per hour, because nobody can quote that blind.
- • Full bathroom plumbing or overhead tank work as starting at.
- • Night and emergency work priced separately, if you charge more for it. Say so in daylight rather than at midnight.
The last one matters. Emergency pricing is fair, and arguments about it happen only when the customer hears it for the first time while standing in a wet room.
A page with your rates and a QR code you can stick under the sink. Free to make.
Make your card freeBuilding groups do more for you than any advertisement
Almost every apartment building in urban India has a WhatsApp group, and plumber recommendations move through them constantly. You cannot join those groups. Your link can.
After a job that went well, send the customer your link and say keep this, and send it to anyone in the building who needs it. That is not advertising. It is a satisfied customer forwarding a working page, which is the only recommendation that carries weight in a group of neighbours.
Put the link in your own WhatsApp about too. Anybody who has your number at all can then reach the full page, rates and all.
What it costs and where to start
The card, the QR code, the rate list and WhatsApp sharing are free. Ahoyy charges only for revealing verified business contacts from the directory in volume, at ₹199 for 25 reveals or ₹299 and ₹799 monthly. Nothing in this article needs a paid plan.
If you also want to be found by people who do not have your number at all, there is a separate public listing you can switch on. It stays off until you decide to turn it on.
Do the stickers first. They are the part that works at eleven at night when you are asleep.
One more habit worth building. When a builder, a society secretary or a hardware shop owner hands you a card, photograph it into the app instead of putting it in your shirt pocket. Those three kinds of people send plumbers more repeat work than any customer does, and a shirt pocket is where cards go to die in a washing machine.
